Parents and student-athletes who attend Lower Merion schools can expect that there is an effort to encourage participation in the sport of field hockey at the middle school level.
DEVELOPMENTAL MISSION
One dimension of the Lower Merion Field Hockey Mission is to encourage a sincere passion for our sport and encourage student-athletes to pursue opportunities which they can develop themselves in the areas of: commitment and responsibility to the team; effective communication on and off the pitch; individual technical development; and develop the ability to read, recognize, and move through space at appropriate times on the pitch; when and how to move through space. The program encourages each student-athlete to select the opportunities which provide a culture/climate which is conducive and appropriate for individual growth in order to possibly achieve self-established personal goals.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEVELOPMENT
There are three opportunities through which student-athletes in the Seventh and Eighth grades at Bala Cynwyd and Welsh Valley can build a foundation with the sport.
Opportunity One:
The Lower Merion School District middle school sponsored teams at Welsh Valley and Bala Cynwyd schools.
It is through this experience that physical & emotional wellness, sportsmanship, skill development, character development, teamwork, expanded knowledge & appreciation of our sport which are learned by student-athletes.
Opportunity Two: Penn State University Team Camp
Student-athletes who are Sixth graders being promoted to the Seventh grade and Seventh graders being promoted to the Eighth grade are encouraged to organize and and sign-up for the camp experience. The Penn State camp experience covers all aspects of the game, including position development and game strategies. Coaches of the younger teams are specifically matched due to their delivery manner/method of technical skill which is age and experience-appropriate for these athletes whereby they emphasize individual and group achievement and growth.
Opportunity Three:
Participation with Club Field Hockey at the Academy level or U-14 level.
Southeastern Pennsylvania is the national hub of field hockey. Due to our location, there are many field hockey clubs in our area. There are five, specific, competitive clubs which have a history of developing technically sound players who begin at this age and continue a playing career at the inter-collegiate, national and international levels. If a Lower Merion field hockey student-athlete aspires to continue a career as a member of an NAIA, Division III, II, I filed hockey program, membership with a club team is the most effective manner to have opportunities which could lead to possibly being a recruited prospective student-athlete at the college level.
